Community Harvest Ontario
The Community Harvest Ontario program provides a greater volume of fresh, healthy, local foods to Ontarians in need. By engaging farmers and volunteers in solutions to end hunger, the objectives of this project are fulfilled in three key ways:
GROW: We engage farmers in growing projects where a portion of the farm land or crop is earmarked for donation to the local food bank.
GLEAN: We connect volunteer groups with farms that have edible food remaining on the fields after the harvest season. Volunteers pick the remaining food, a process known as gleaning, and this food is then picked up by the local food bank for distribution to local families facing hunger.
DONATE: We access edible surplus produce that would otherwise be tilled back into the soil or disposed. Typically, these are fruits and vegetables that cannot be sold in the traditional markets due to cosmetic reasons such as shape, colour, or size, but that are perfectly healthy, fresh and delicious.
